This 20-lesson course will give you a solid foundation in individual tax preparation, enabling you to complete all of the standard returns. There are no entrance requirements. With this knowledge, you can earn extra money as a tax professional in California after registering with CTEC.

This course focuses on the majority of tax forms needed to fill out tax returns for yourself and the general public. In the course you should acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to complete federal and California income tax returns and research tax issues. Because "Practice makes perfect", the course requires at least two tax returns prepared for most lessons, one of which will be done as a class project and one of which will be completed individually and submitted to your instructor.

Because we believe that one of the critical skills necessary to accurate tax preparation is the ability to conduct an effective interview, the course will also include information sheets on interview techniques. It may be suggested by your instructor that you conduct in-class interviews with one student being the taxpayer and the other the tax preparer. The appendix has sample interview sheets that cover almost every class session.

The classes are organized into three segments. First new material is presented. Then students should discuss the class problems and ask any questions of each other and the instructor. Finally, there is a homework problem which uses the new material and which is to be completed outside of class. These problems should be submitted to the instructor and reviewed at the beginning of the next class. In addition, there are reading in both the workbook and Pub 17 to be completed outside of class.

The basic unit is the class session and each session has a session summary, in-class practice and home assignments. In our classroom, we also  include an extra mid-week homework session that has proven helpful to help students answer individual questions that may arise.
